In 2009, Carole Dawn Reinhart, world renowned trumpet soloist and professor at the prestigious University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna, Austria, received her PhD with this dissertation.  In most books about women musicians, it is difficult to find even one paragraph about women brass players.  She has combined all of her findings from American and European sources into this documentation, which gives a surprising account of active women brass musicians over the past five centuries.

In addition to this historical aspect, Miss Reinhart has also documented the founding of the International Women’s Brass Conference by Susan Slaughter.  There are biographies of the numerous performers at six conferences (1993, 1997, 2000, 2003, 2006 and 2010) giving an overall picture of the growing possibilities for women brass musicians in the 21st century.  Of special interest are the almost 50 pages of pictures of women’s bands, in the U.S.A. and Europe, dating from 1873.
Miss Reinhart’s goal with this this work is to inspire young women brass player’s to continue the research on this still considered unusual profession for women.
