IWBC 2022 Composition Competition Winner: Gina Gillie

Congratulations to Gina Gillie, winner of our 2022 IWBC Composition Competition! Her piece, “Mountain Ascent,” will be premiered at the conference this May.

More about Dr. Gillie: Dr. Gina Gillie holds the position of Professor of Music at Pacific Lutheran University where she teaches horn, composition, ear training, chamber music, and music history. While all of Gillie’s degrees and training are in Horn Performance, she has been an active composer since 2009. She was influenced by her mentor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Douglas Hill, to write music, and her doctoral dissertation included a 20-minute multi-movement original work for soprano, horn and piano, entitled To the Seasons. Her style incorporates singing melodies and clear harmonies that lend a new flavor to classical styles.

She is frequently commissioned to write music for chamber ensembles that include brass instruments. Her Sonata for Horn and Piano was commissioned for Steven Cohen’s recorded album, Cruise Control, and has become a popular work to include on recitals. Her Philharmonic Fanfare was premiered by the Seattle Philharmonic at Benaroya Hall in Seattle in October of 2019. Gillie’s music has been performed internationally in countries including Australia, Belgium, Canada, Portugal, and the U.S. Her music is published by WaveFront Music, and many of her pieces are self-published and available on her website.

Congratulations as well to Madeline Lee who was awarded Honorable Mention.
