The U.S. Army Band will be hosting a Regional Audition on April 19th, 2023 at the Manhattan School of Music in New York City, NY. Candidates who pass the pre-screening round at this Regional Audition will be advanced to the Semi-final round on June 27th at Brucker Hall in Arlington, VA. Travel expenses will be paid for by the U.S. Army for invited civilian candidates pending enlistment qualification and funding approval.

The annual starting salary for Staff Sergeant equates to $73,000 without dependents and $78,000 with dependents

Audition Information

Auditions will be held at Brucker Hall, home of The United States Army Band “Pershing’s Own” at 400 McNair Road, Fort Myer, Virginia 22211-1306.

This audition will have an optional pre-screening taped round. Travel expenses will be paid for by the U.S. Army for invited civilian candidates who pass the pre-screening round for this audition pending enlistment qualification and funding approval. Candidates whose recordings do not pass the pre-screening round, or choose not to make one, WILL still be able to attend the live pre-screening round on October 30th. The audition will include the performance of prepared excerpts and sight-reading. Applicants that pass the pre-screening round will be invited to a semi-final round on October 31st.

Prescreening recordings will be due by August 14th, 2023

Applications for the live audition will be due by October 16th, 2023

All applicants must meet basic enlistment standards for The US Army including:

  • Age 17-34 at the time of the audition
  • Currently hold U.S. Citizenship
  • Meet height/weight standards
  • Meet medical, moral and physical requirements. If you have any pre-existing medical conditions, recent surgeries, or criminal history, please consult with your local Army Recruiter prior to applying to confirm enlistment eligibility.

The Music Department at North Carolina Central University seeks an Associate Professor, Trombone/Jazz Studies. This is a tenured/ tenure track, full-time position to begin July 1, 2023. Teaching responsibilities include Applied Trombone instruction, with a specialty in Jazz Studies. The position will require a minimum of 5 years experience of teaching in Jazz Studies core curricula subjects, which may include jazz theory and improvisation, jazz arranging and composition, jazz styles and analysis, jazz history, and directing jazz combos and ensembles. The position also requires experience of membership in, and the ability to direct a big band, with extensive experience in big band literature, styles and repertoire. As a member of the faculty, the successful candidate will be expected to perform duties as assigned and required by the Music Department and the University including recruiting students, building professional relationships with local, regional, national, and international jazz organizations, serving as a liaison to high school music programs, participating in department, university, and professional service and maintaining a roster of creative and/or scholarly activities.

Interlochen Center for the Arts seeks applicants for the position of Linda VanSickle Smith French Horn Chair and Director of Brass Studies (Year-Round).
