REQUIREMENTS FOR SOLO COMPETITIONS 2022

Eligibility Requirements for Solo Competitions:

  1. Participants must be pre-registered conference attendees. 
  2. All participants must return a completed competition application along with the 

$50 competition fee, by April 1, 2022.

No applications will be accepted after this date. 

SOLO COMPETITIONS:

Categories 

The solo competition is open to all student, amateur and professional women and men in the following categories:

 

Category I:  23 and under 

Category II:  24 and older 

(All age requirements are as of March 31, 2022)

The Preliminary Round of the solo competition will be held on the morning of the first day of the conference on the campus of the University of North Texas in Denton, TX on Tuesday, May 23, 2022. Rehearsals will be held on Monday, May 22nd, 2022. Competitors will be able to choose their rehearsal time on a first-come, first-serve basis.

All contestants will perform in the Preliminary Round.  The number of participants who advance to the Final Round will be determined by the judges.   The judges may, at their discretion, withhold awarding any prize if the quality of playing is not at an appropriate level.

 

Each round will be performed behind a screen.  The final round of the solo competition is open to the public.

SOLO COMPETITION PRIZES FOR PRELIMINARY ROUND: 

Three prizes are offered in each age category for each instrument at the conclusion of the preliminary round.  All solo competition prizes will be awarded during the conference.

 

First Prize = $600 U.S. plus a $60 gift certificate to use at the conference exhibits. 

Second Prize =  $300 U.S. plus a $60 gift certificate to use at the conference exhibits. 

Third Prize =  $100 U.S. plus a $60 gift certificate to use at the conference exhibits.

 

GRAND PRIZE FINAL ROUND:

The first prize winner in each category on each instrument will advance to the Grand Prize Final Round.  These competitors (up to six) will compete for three prizes in each age category.

 

Grand Prize =   $5,000 U.S.

 Second Prize = $3,000 U.S.

 Third Prize =   $1,000 U.S.

 

The Grand Prize Final Round of competition will be held on the morning of Friday, May 27, 2022 and is open to the public.  An accompanist is required for all rounds of competition.  You may elect to provide your own accompanist or an IWBC accompanist can be provided for a fee of $50 for a rehearsal and performance in both rounds of the competition if necessary.  (No extra rehearsal time is available.)  You will need to arrive early to rehearse with an IWBC accompanist.  Please plan accordingly.  

 

ACCOMPANISTS

IWBC will provide accompanists at the cost of $50 per competitor. This includes one 30 minute rehearsal and performance at both rounds of competition (if the competitor advances)
Competitors are welcome to bring their own accompanist who will be provided a complimentary accompanist registration pass.

Ginger Turner Ensemble Competition

Eligibility Requirements for Ensemble Competitions:

  1. Participants must be pre-registered conference attendees, and members of IWBC.
  2. All participants must return a completed competition application along with the 

$15.00 per member, competition fee by April 1, 2022.

No applications will be accepted after this date.  

ENSEMBLE COMPETITION:

The ensemble competition is open to all student, amateur and professional musicians of all genders in a like instrument ensemble with three or more members. Each ensemble should prepare a piece or multi-movement piece 8-12 minutes in length. 

All ensembles are required to bring an original score and parts to the conference as well as upload a PDF of the score when registering. 

Percussion accompaniment for ensembles is permitted as long as you bring your own equipment.
 
Arrangements are allowed.

The Preliminary Round of the ensemble competition will be held  on the campus of North Texas on Wednesday May 25, 2022 from 8:00am-2:30pm depending upon the total number of participants.  Due to limited space, the spots will be available on a first come-first serve basis once registration opens. 

All contestants will perform in the Preliminary Round.  The number of participants who advance to the Final Round will be determined by the judges.   Selected ensembles will also be invited to perform on the courtyard concerts during the conference. The judges may, at their discretion, withhold awarding any prize if the quality of playing is deemed not at an appropriate level.

The preliminary and final rounds will be behind a screen.  All rounds of the ensemble competitions are open to the public.  

GRAND PRIZE FINAL ROUND:

Selected ensembles will advance to the Grand Prize Final Round.  These competitors will compete for three prizes. 

Grand Prize =   $5,000 U.S.*

 Second Prize = $3,000 U.S.*

 Third Prize =   $1,000 U.S.*

*Each member of the groups advancing to the grand prize final round will receive $20 exhibitor gift certificate. 

The Grand Prize Final Round of competition will be held on the Friday, May 27, 2022 at 2:00 pm and is open to the public.
